Golden Slipper Stakes
Looking for this year’s Golden Slipper Stakes betting guide, tips, field and form? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
Run over 1,200 metres every Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes is the world’s richest race for two-year-olds. With a slightly reduced $4,920,000 prize purse as of 2024, it attracts Australia’s best two year old talent and is contested towards the end of March at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.
Contested since 1957, the Golden Slipper Stakes was first won by Todman. The race named in his honour, the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) held a fortnight earlier, now makes a key lead-up into the coveted juvenile’s feature with the double most recently completed by Vancover (2015).
The Todman Stakes winner gains automatic entry into the Golden Slipper Stakes field, as does the winning filly out of the female’s equivalent contest held on the same day – the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m). Estijaab (2018) was the last filly to complete the Reisling – Golden Slipper double.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse holds the record of having prepared an incredible eight Golden Slipper Stakes winners, her latest being Farnan (2020) and Lady Of Camelot (2024) who she co-trained in partnership with Adrian Bott. The 2020 Golden Slipper results saw Waterhouse surpass the previous training record of six wins, held by her late father T.J. Smith.
The Golden Slipper is now also the opening leg of the coveted “Grand Slam” series of races that continues for three-year-olds with the Golden Rose and concludes with the four-year-olds in the $10 million The Golden Eagle – a $5 million bonus on offer for any horse that manages to win all three events over their career.
Golden Slipper graduates traditionally back-up in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ (1400m) and or the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m). Fireburn (2022) was the last two-year-old to complete the Golden Slipper – Inglis Sires’ double before a second in that year’s Champagne Stakes results.
Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller enjoyed his first Golden Slipper Stakes win with his Pago Pago Stakes winner Shinzo scoring an upset at $16 odds in 2023.
