Champagne Stakes 2026 Results

The official 2026 Champagne Stakes results will be available below once the race takes place on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

  1. #2 Fireball
  2. #1 Campione D'italia
  3. #5 Diameter

Chris Waller’s Inglis Millenium winning son of Snitzel, Fireball ($6.50), improved on his lead-up third in the Inglis Sires’ to turn the tables on his stablemate Campione D’italia ($2.15F) when fighting back in a driving finish to salute by 0.26 lengths off a peach of a ride by Tim Clark in the 2026 Champagne Stakes results. Waller’s Fernhill Handicap winner from the Saturday prior, Diameter ($26), ran huge for third. Campione D’italia lost few admirers in his brave loss and remains favourite in futures betting on the Group 1 JJ Atkins in Brisbane.

The Group 1 Champagne Stakes is a 1600m set weights race for two-year-old mile types contested at Royal Randwick in mid-late April each Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

The event is one of two final elite level features of the carnival run alongside the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) for TJ Smith Stakes graduates and is held on the Saturday following the coveted ‘The Championships’ race days.

The Group 1 Inglis’ Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) held at the track a fortnight earlier is considered a key lead-up into the Champagne Stakes with King’s Legacy (2020) and Militarize (2023) the last youngsters to do the double.

The Champagne Stakes is also considered the final leg of the coveted Juvenile Triple Crown following on from the Golden Slipper and Inglis’ Sires. Six two-year-olds have won the Autumn 2YO Triple Crown with Baguette (1970), Luskin Star (1977), Tierce (1991), Burst (1992), Dance Hero (2004), and most recently Pierro (2012).

In 2023 trainer Chris Waller took out the Sydney 2YO Triple Crown with Shinzo saluting in the Golden Slipper before Militarize won the Inglis – Champagne Stakes double. He also returned that spring to frank the form with a win in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m).

In 2022 the Golden Slipper – ATC Sires’ winning filly Fireburn was narrowly beaten in the final leg and denied the Triple Crown by the barest of margins going down to She’s Extreme.

She’s Extreme would frank the Champagne Stakes form that spring placing in a number of Sydney Group 1 races before her impressive Group 1 VRC Oakes (2500m) victory at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

A time honoured classic having been run and won since 1861, the Champagne Stakes has been won by plenty of nice types during their juvenile racing season including Vain (1969) who won the race by a record 10 lengths in 1:09.40 when it was a 1200m event and the current 1600m race record (1:34.47) holder Seabrook (2018).

The 2024 Champagne Stakes form was firmly franked with the winner, Broadsiding, going on to win the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) in Brisbane that winter and the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes that spring in Sydney before his gallant third behind superstar Via Sistina in October’s Ladbrokes Cox Plate results.

In 2026, trainer Chris Waller trained the Champagne Stakes trifecta with his Inglis Sires’ third placegetter, Fireball ($6.50), narrowly upsetting the team’s winner of that key lead-up, Campione D’italia, with Diameter on the quick back-up off a Fernhill Handicap win at the track and trip the Saturday prior finishing third.

Which Horse Will Win the Champagne Stakes?

The best way to pick which two-year-old will win the Champagne Stakes in 2026 is to take into account the earlier Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival form, assess the barriers, consider the weight the horse will carry and look for the proven young milers in the mix.

Additional factors to consider when picking the Champagne Stakes winner include:

  • Top 4 Lead-Up: Since 2006 just two Champagne Stakes winners have run worse than fourth in their final lead-up run.
  • Filly Factor: The fillies have a strong recent record over the boys in the past decade. She’s Extreme (2022) was the last Champagne Stakes winning filly.
  • Snowden Stable: Co-trainer Peter Snowden prepared his fifth Champagne Stakes winner in 2021 with Captivant.

Champagne Stakes Favourites 2026

Favourites in 2026 Champagne Stakes betting include last start Group 1 Inglis Sires’ winner Campione D’Italia, undefeated TL Bailleu Stakes winner Southend and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained filly Miss Chanel coming off a second in the Inglis Sires’.

From 2012 – 2026 there have been eight Champagne Stakes favourites to salute for the punters, most recently King’s Legacy ($2.70 in 2020), Militarize ($2.05 in 2023), and Nepotism ($3.90 in 2025).
