The Gilgai Stakes is a Group 2 sprint race contested down the famous Flemington ‘Straight Six’ course during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The 1200m event offers $300,000 in prize money and is run at set weights plus penalties.
Part of the Turnbull Stakes Day card, the Gilgai Stakes runs in either late September or early October.
The best sprinters out of the Gilgai Stakes may back-up in Sydney’s $20 million The Everest should they secure a slot in the world’s richest turf race or return to Flemington on Derby Day for the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m), which is now known as the VRC Champions Sprint.
All Silent (2009) was the last horse to complete the Gilgai Stakes – VRC Sprint Classic in the same year.
Run and won since 1984 the Gilgai Stakes has been won by plenty of star sprinters over the years including Placid Ark (1987), Redelva (1988), Hareeba (1994), Hay List (2010), Platelet (2013), dual champion Chautauqua (2014-15), and Sunlight (2019).
The race was renamed from Sir Rupert Steele Stakes to the Gilgai in 1999 in honour of Gilgai Farm Stud in Victoria, the birthplace of superstar sprinter Black Caviar.
In 2022 the Gilgai Stakes winner Private Eye ran second in The Everest results before taking out the $3 million Winners Stakes. The Gilgai runner-up that year, Roch ‘N’ Horse, went on to win the Champions Sprint in an upset, while Baller finished third in both events.
The 2024 Gilgai Stakes form was franked with the winner, Right To Party, running second at her next start in the Champions Sprint at HQ.
