The Turnbull Stakes is a Group 1 race held at Flemington Racecourse in early October.
Since 1972, this event has been a 2000 metre race. Run at set weights plus penalties, the Turnbull Stakes offers $750,000 as of 2023.
This race can be a great lead in to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, especially for people wanting to bet on the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and the iconic Melbourne Cup. Green Moon (2012) was the last galloper to complete the Turnbull Stakes – Melbourne Cup double in the same year.
In 2020 trainer Chris Waller prepared the First Four in the Turnbull Stakes results led by the champion mare Verry Elleegant who went on to complete the Turnbull Stakes – Caulfield Cup double. Verry Elleegant returned in 2022 to run fourth as the beaten Turnbull Stakes favourite before winning that year’s Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).
After completing the Turnbull Stakes – Caulfield Cup double in 2021, the Peter Moody-trained Incentivise ran second to the previous year’s Turnbull Stakes champ Verry Elleegant in the 2021 Melbourne Cup results.
Plenty of outstanding horses have won the Turnbull Stakes throughout history including Ajax (1938, 1940), Comic Court (1949, 1950), triple Melbourne Cup champion Makybe Diva (2005), and more recently four-time Cox Plate hero Winx (2017, 2018).
The 2023 Turnbull Stakes winner Gold Trip returned to winning form in his first victory since taking out the previous year’s Melbourne Cup.
The 2023 Turnbull Stakes also produced that year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up with Soulcombe going one better than his third in the lead-up event.
In 2024 trainer Chris Waller won the Turnbull Stakes for the sixth time in 10 years preparing the quinella when Via Sistina beat Buckaroo.
Via Sistina franked the form with a next-up eight-length victory in the Cox Plate!
