The McEwen Stakes is a Group 2 feature sprint race held at Moonee Valley Racecourse which moved from September to late October to join the Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day line-up in 2024.
Previously a short-distance event contested over 1000m, the McEwen Stakes distance was increased to 1200m in 2024.
It is run at weight-for-age and offers $300,000 in prize money.
Before changing dates, it served as a lead-up race into the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) held at The Valley about a month later on Cox Plate Eve and Chautauqua (2015) followed by Imperatriz (2024) were the last horses to do the McEwen Stakes – Manikato Stakes double.
The Group 1 A.J. Moir Stakes (1000m) at the same track and distance now serves as a notable McEwen Stakes lead-up race.
Brilliant Kiwi mare Imperatriz made history in 2023 winning the McEwen Stakes before Group 1 victories in the Moir Stakes, Manikato Stakes and the VRC Champions Sprint.
McEwen Stakes graduates can still target the Group 1 VRC Champions Sprint (1200m) down the Flemington straight over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
