The Group 1 A.J. Moir Stakes is a weight-for-age sprint race previously contested on a Friday night under the lights at The Valley in late September before being moved to a Saturday in early September ahead of the 2024 edition.
The short-distance feature runs over 1000m and was elevated to its current elite level status for the first time in 2013.
In 2026, the Moir Stakes will run at Sandown-Hillside with Moonee Valley under redevelopment.
Many legendary sprinters have won the A.J. Moir Stakes over the years including Manikato (1982), Schillaci (1992), the undefeated superstar Black Caviar (2010, 2011), and brilliant Queensland galloper Buffering (2012, 2014, 2015) who took the race out three times.
The A.J. Moir Stakes serves as a nice Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival lead-up to other Group 1 sprint races including the VRC Champions Sprint run down the famous ‘Straight Six’ at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Imperatriz (2023) was the last horse to complete the Moir Stakes – Champions Sprint double with the ace Kiwi mare also winning that year’s Manikato Stakes in between.
A potential early lead-up into the A.J. Moir Stakes race is Caulfield’s Group 3 The Heath 1100 Stakes (1100m) run in August, a double last achieved by Samaready (2013).
