From a wide gate, Jigsaw got to the front and lead all-the-way denying Angel Capital by a half-length with three-year-old Devil Night running third as an $81 outsider.

Run over 1,200 metres each Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, the Group 1 William Reid Stakes is a popular weight-for-age sprint feature. Recently run under the lights on a Friday evening at The Valley in March, the event moved back to a Saturday time slot in 2024 and currently takes place on the same date as Sydney’s Golden Slipper Stakes. 

Flemington’s Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) makes a nice lead-up into the William Reid Stakes – now worth $1 million in total prize money – and Sunlight (2019) was the last to do the double. 

Plenty of quality sprinters have won the William Reid Stakes since the race was first run in 1925 including five-time hero Manikato (1979-83) and undefeated star Black Caviar (2011 and 2013).

The 2023 William Reid Stakes winner Imperatriz went on to complete the Group 1 Moir Stakes – Manikato Stakes double back at the track that spring before a win in Flemington’s Group 1 Champions Sprint (1200m) that Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Imperatriz returned in 2024 saluting as the odds-on favourite to become the latest dual champion of the William Reid Stakes.

Note, in 2026 the William Reid Stakes ran at Caulfield Racecourse with Moonee Valley undergoing a major redevelopment.
