The JRA Plate – officially registered as the Japan Racing Association Plate – is a Group 3 quality handicap race contested over 2000m in mid-April on All Aged Stakes Day.

One of the final Group races of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the event is open to all horses aged three-years-old and above and offers $160,000 in prize money.

Inaugurated in 1997, the JRA Plate has held Group 3 status since 2017 and has been won by plenty of quality staying types including Tie The Knot (1999) who went on to win the Group 1 Sydney Cup over two miles just five days later.

Other standout JRA Plate winners include: that year’s subsequent Melbourne Cup champion Viewed (2008), Herculian Prince (2010), Kelinni (2013) and Tally (2018).

The JRA Plate now serves as a potential lead-up to bigger and better races held during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including the Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m).

The 2021 JRA Plate winner Paths Of Glory finshed third to Zaaki in that year’s The Q22 results. Zaaki was originally second past the post in the JRA Plate results, but was subsequently disqualified.

Which Horse Will Win The JRA Plate in 2022

The best way to pick which horse will win the JRA Plate in 2022 is to take into account their lead-up form from the autumn, assess the barriers and look for the proven Group performers in Sydney.

Additional factors to consider when picking the JRA Plate winner include:

  • Class Runners – Plenty of Group 1 or 2 winners have taken out the event down in grade so looking for the class horses in the mix is a top betting tip.
  • Lead-Up – The Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) serves as a strong lead-up into the JRA Plate. The last JRA Plate winner to come off that race was Paths Of Glory (3rd in 2021).
  • Favourite Factor – Favourites in JRA Plate betting have a strong strike-rate in the race.
