Run over 2,000 metres, the Doomben Cup is a Group 1 race taking place at Doomben Racecourse during May as part of the popular Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. With a $1,000,000 prize purse, the weight-for-age showdown attracts a quality field each year and has been won by plenty of quality horses since its inauguration in 1933.
The Gold Coast’s Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) held a fortnight prior is the key form race to follow into the Doomben Cup results and classy mare Streama (2014), runaway seven-length champion of the latter Zaaki (2021), and new track record holder Antino (2025) are the latest to do the double.
Zaaki returned in 2022 having won the Hollindale for the second time but only managed to run third in the Doomben Cup trifecta as the beaten $1.24 favourite behind Huetor.
Zaaki won the Hollindale for the third time in 2023 and jumped favourite in that winter’s Doomben Cup but eventually ran seventh to Huetor who went back-to-back.
The best out of the Doomben Cup field are likely to target a run on Stradbroke Handicap Day in the new-look $1.2 million Group 2 The Q22 (2200m). Zaaki would also go on to win The Q22 in 2022 completing the Hollindale – Doomben Cup – The Q22 treble.
From 1933 to 1979, the race was run as a Principal Race. Ever since 1980, it has held and maintained Group 1 status.
Kovalica turned his Doomben Cup third into proper form when he stepped out next start and nailed The Q22, giving the 2025 edition a serious boost.

Zaaki also jumped favourite in 2023 Doomben Cup betting at $2.15 but ran seventh to the dual champ Huetor who won again at $10.
Antino ($3 in 2025) was the last Doomben Cup favourite to salute.
