One of the biggest betting races of the Melbourne Spring Carnival takes centre stage at Caulfield this Saturday, with a capacity field assembled for the 150th running of the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). The Neds form team has you covered with our 2026 Caulfield Cup predictions, tips and favourites, breaking down the key winning chances, market movers and value runners in Australia’s premier handicap.
The Caulfield Cup is the world’s richest mile and a half handicap and key lead-up to the ‘race that stops a nation’ with the Group 1 $10.2 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) slated for Flemington on Tuesday November 3.
It boasts a sensational honour role of the country’s best stayers from the inaugural champ Newminster through to last year’s Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double hero Half Yours.
This year’s edition features an intriguing mix of proven Group 1 performers, international challengers and emerging staying stars. Defending champion Half Yours returns looking to complete a rare Caulfield Cup double, while in-form Turnbull Stakes winner Cosmic Crusader heads the latest Caulfield Cup betting odds after a breakout spring campaign.
The powerful Ciaron Maher stable is represented by a strong contingent led by Zahrann, Saint George and Royal Supremacy, while international raiders Wine Dark Sea, Enfjaar and Starford add further depth to an already high-quality field. Former Oaks star Treasurethe Moment and last-start JRA Cup winner Royal Supremacy are among the others capable of making their presence felt.
With the Caulfield Cup barrier draw complete, betting markets taking shape and plenty of genuine winning chances engaged, the 2026 edition of the first leg of the Spring Cups double as one of the most competitive staying features of the spring.
Below you’ll find our full 2026 Caulfield Cup preview, betting tips and same race multi selections.
2026 Caulfield Cup Favourites & Best Bets
I’ve landed on COSMIC CRUSADER (17) as my top pick in this year’s Caulfield Cup, even if he’s been dealt a tricky hand from the wide draw.
The former Perth galloper has gone to another level since arriving in Victoria for Andrea Leek, putting together a terrific spring campaign that includes wins in the PB Lawrence and, most importantly, a dominant Group 1 Turnbull Stakes victory at Flemington. He absolutely put a quality field to the sword there, carrying 58kg and charging away by 1.75 lengths in one of the strongest lead-up performances we’ve seen heading into this year’s Cup.
The obvious query is the rise to 2400m for the first time, but the way he attacked the line over 2000m in the Turnbull suggests the extra trip is well within reach. If anything, he gave every indication he’s looking for it.
The barrier certainly doesn’t do him any favours, but having William Pike aboard is a huge positive and he’ll only carry a very manageable 56kg. If Pike can slot in somewhere midfield with cover and conserve a little fuel early, Cosmic Crusader has the turn of foot to put these away late.
He’s got the profile of a horse peaking at exactly the right time, he’s proven himself at Group 1 level this preparation, and if he runs out the mile-and-a-half journey, the rest might simply be racing for second.

| Most recently won by 1.75 len in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on October 3 over 2000m in the wet defeating Light Infantry Man with 58kg at $8. Before that made some head-way from midfield; 2nd of 8 in the G1 Underwood Stakes at this track on September 19 over 1800m, 1.75 len behind Birdman carrying 59kg at $2.25. Lovely profile through top races, if he stays the trip he just about wins. | |||
If you’re looking to knock off a few of the shorter-priced runners and chase some value, WINE DARK SEA (19) is the one that appeals to me as the each way danger in this year’s Caulfield Cup field.
The British raider arrives with a serious staying profile, having won three of his past four starts overseas, highlighted by a tough Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes victory at Newbury where he carried 61kg and beat a quality field over further than Saturday’s Caulfield Cup trip. His record at 2400m and beyond stacks up nicely, and unlike some rivals, there’s no guesswork about whether he’ll see out a strong mile-and-a-half.
The barrier draw hasn’t done him any favours, but if any jockey can overcome a wide gate in a big race, it’s Damian Lane, who knows exactly what’s required after steering international visitor Mer De Glace to Caulfield Cup success in 2019.
Wine Dark Sea is reportedly in Australia with one eye on the Melbourne Cup, but that’s hardly a negative. These European stayers are bred for races like this, and his overseas form suggests he’s more than capable of measuring up to this level.
At the price ($9 at time of publish), he looks the type who can camp just off the speed, keep finding when others are under pressure, and give punters a great sight. If he gets even a touch of luck from the draw, don’t be surprised if the international visitor is right in the finish.
A roughie that can spice up those exotic Caulfield Cup bets and give the better fancied a genuine run for their money is KINGSWOOD (20).
The British-bred Roaring Lion seven-year-old might not have the headline profile of some of the favourites, but his recent form is hard to knock. He hasn’t been far away in two strong Group 1 lead-ups at Caulfield, finishing fourth in both the Underwood Stakes and last weekend’s Might And Power, beaten less than two lengths in the latter behind shock winner Land Legend.
What I like is that he’s been sticking on strongly at the end of his races and now gets up to the 2400m where he looks set to appreciate the staying test. The quick back-up from last Saturday doesn’t worry me either. If anything, it could be the recipe for a peak performance from a horse that’s fit, hard and racing consistently.
The removal of the winkers adds a bit of intrigue, and with the race likely to be run at a genuine tempo, Kingswood should be able to settle off the speed and be launching late when plenty of others are feeling the pinch.
He’ll need a few things to go his way from a horror gate, but at juicy odds ($20 at time of publish) he’s one of the better roughies in the field and looks well worth including. Don’t be shocked if he’s the horse rattling home into the finish when the big guns start to tire.
2026 Caulfield Cup Same Race Multi Selections
- Top 3 – No. 2 Cosmic Crusader
- Top 6 – No. 4 Kingswood
- Top 4 – No. 10 Wine Dark Sea
COSMIC CRUSADER (17) is the favourite and key inclusion in my Caulfield Cup Same Race Multi after a dominant Turnbull victory stamped him as the horse to beat. If he runs out a strong 2400m, a Top 3 finish looks well within reach despite the awkward draw.
WINE DARK SEA (19) for a Top 4 finish is the value play, with the British raider bringing proven staying credentials and Damian Lane aboard, while KINGSWOOD (20) for a Top 5 finish rounds things out after a pair of honest Group 1 performances and looks capable of charging home late over the longer trip.

Cosmic Crusader heads the 2026 Caulfield Cup betting after his outstanding Group 1 Turnbull Stakes victory and continued rise through the staying ranks this spring.
Our best bet is Cosmic Crusader, who brings the strongest last start form into the race following his dominant Turnbull Stakes success and looks capable of handling the rise to 2400m.
British raider Wine Dark Sea rates as the standout each-way play. He boasts an excellent record at 2400m and beyond, arrives off strong European form, and has leading big-race jockey Damian Lane aboard.
Kingswood profiles as one of the best roughies in the field. The in-form seven-year-old has been competitive in quality Group 1 lead-up races and looks well suited stepping up to the 2400m journey.
Yes, although it is no easy task. The most recent Caulfield Cup winner to carry 58kg or more was Admire Rakti (58kg) in 2014, while Best Solution won with 57.5kg in 2018. Defending champion Half Yours will attempt to overcome 57.5kg in 2026.
Yes, seven horses have won the Caulfield Cup more than once. The most recent dual Caulfield Cup winner was Ming Dynasty, who won in 1977 and 1980. Half Yours is attempting to become the first dual winner of the race since and the first to do so on successive years since Rising Fast (1954, 1955).
The Caulfield Cup–Melbourne Cup double refers to a horse winning both races in the same spring. Half Yours achieved the famous feat in 2025 and will be looking to defend his Caulfield Cup crown this year.
Absolutely. Since the Caulfield Cup opened up to horses outside of Australia and New Zealand for the first time in 1998 there have been six international champions of the race. International-trained horses have enjoyed success in the race over the years, including Japanese stayer Mer De Glace in 2019. This year’s international contingent is headed by Wine Dark Sea, Enfjaar and Starford.
A popular Neds Same Race Multi for the 2026 Caulfield Cup is: Cosmic Crusader Top 3, Wine Dark Sea Top 4, Kingswood Top 5. The trio combine strong staying credentials, proven lead-up form and attractive value for punters chasing a Caulfield Cup Same Race Multi.
