Run over 1,200 metres, the Moreton Cup is a Group 2 race taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in late May or early June during the popular Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival on Queensland Oaks Day.
Formerly known as the QTC Cup, the set weights plus penalties clash offers $300,000 in prize money is now a key final lead-up into the following weekend’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m). Sincero (11th in 2010) however was the last Stradbroke Handicap winner to come out of the event.
The Moreton Cup winner is also exempt from ballot for the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara for the fillies and mares in mid-late June.
The QTC Cup / Moreton Cup has been run and won since 1979 and has been won by plenty of quality sprinters over the years including Schillaci (1992), Hareeba (1996), Ortensia (2009), and Ball Of Muscle (2015).
In 2024, Vilana won the Moreton Cup before a next-up third in that year’s Stradbroke Handicap trifecta.
