The BRC Sprint is a Group 3 race run under quality handicap conditions held as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival in either late May or early June on Doomben Cup Day. The race is currently worth $300,000.

Contested over 1350m, the BRC Sprint serves as a potential lead-up into the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) held at Eagle Farm in mid-June.

In 2019 the BRC Sprint winner Tyzone ran a next-up second in the Stradbroke before improving on his BRC Sprint seventh in 2020 to take out that year’s Stradbroke. In 2021 Tofane improved on a BRC Sprint second to win the Stradbroke next start.

The 2022 Stradbroke Handicap winner Alligator Blood also came via the BRC Sprint having run second in his lead-up.

Run and won since 1985, the race has been claimed by a number of nice horses over the years including the current race record holder Chief De Beers (1:17.50 in 1998) as well as the cult horse Jungle Edge (2017).

War Machine (2025) was the last horse to complete the BRC Sprint / Stradbroke Handicap double.

Exacta Bet	You must select the runners that finish 1st and 2nd in the correct order, within BRC Sprint to win the Exacta.
Trifecta Bet	You must select runners to finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the correct order, within BRC Sprint to win the Trifecta.
First Four	You must select runners that finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the correct order, within the BRC Sprint to win the First 4.
Quadrella Bet (Quaddie)	You must select the winners of four nominated races to win the Quaddie. This means you would have to select three other races apart from the BRC Sprint, in order to be eligible to place a Quaddie.

Which Horse Will Win the BRC Sprint?

The best way to pick which horse will win BRC Sprint in 2026 is to take into account their lead-up winter racing form, assess the barriers and look for the proven Group sprinters in the mix. 

Additional factors to consider when picking the BRC Sprint winner include: 

• Local Stars: The Queensland-trained horses have a very strong record over the interstate raiders in this race including the 2021 upset by the Robert Heathcote-trained Emerald Kingdom ($31) and the 2022 success by the Toowoomba-trained favourite Soxagon. 
• Returning Runners: Horses that have contested previous editions of the BRC Sprint often do well in subsequent attempts at the race.
• Group 1 Grade: Any Group 1 performers down in grade for the BRC Sprint are worth backing.

BRC Sprint Favourites 2026

2026 BRC Sprint favourites include the flying Bjorn Baker-trained Midnight Dynamite chasing a fourth win on the trot should he gain a start as one of the emergencies, the consistent Harry’s Yacht coming off a second in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford and the local Tony Gollan-trained Boomtown Boss racing second-up off a third in Rockhampton’s The Archer.

Soxagon ($6 in 2022) and War Machine ($2.40 in 2025) are the latest BRC Sprint favourites to win.

The Ladbrokes BRC Sprint 2026 final field features a capacity line-up of potential Kingsford Smith Cup hopefuls led in betting by Bjorn Baker’s third emergency Midnight Dynamite sweating on a start and the in-form Harry’s Yacht coming off a very close second in Gosford’s Listed Takeover Target Stakes.

BRC Sprint Race Day 2026

2026 BRC Sprint traditionally runs on Doomben Cup Day which takes place on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Doomben Racecourse.

Along with the BRC Sprint the other Group status races on 2026 Doomben Cup Day are the:

• Group 1 $1,000,000 Doomben Cup (2000m),
• Group 2 $300,000 The Roses (2000m), and the
• Group 3 $200,000 Fillies & Mares Plate (1600m) – formerly the Pam O’Neill Stakes.
