Stradbroke Season builds towards another major highlight this Saturday, with Queensland Oaks Day set to take centre stage at Eagle Farm.
A strong nine-race program is headlined by the Group 1 Queensland Oaks, where the nation’s leading three-year-old staying fillies clash over 2200m in a searching test of stamina and class. The race has a reputation for identifying future stars, and this year’s renewal appears no exception with a deep and competitive lineup engaged.
The Group 2 Ladbrokes Moreton Cup provides key support to the feature, serving as an important lead-in to next week’s Group 1 Ladbrokes Stradbroke Handicap and adding further intrigue for punters and connections. The program is further strengthened by a quality set of Listed races, including the Spear Chief Handicap, Queensland Day Stakes, Show A Heart Stakes and Lightning Handicap.
With Ladbrokes Stradbroke Day approaching, this meeting shapes as a crucial form reference, with some runners aiming to peak at the right time while others look to announce themselves.
Plenty of storylines and plenty of chances to find a winner. Here are my top selections for every race.
CAVALRY MAN (17) was unlucky not to win over 1600m at Doomben last start.
The Lindsay Gough-trained gelding enjoyed a soft run just off the speed and travelled strongly into the race, but he encountered multiple roadblocks at a crucial stage and only got clear late, finishing hard for a 1.14-length fourth.
He will appreciate getting out in distance and has an excellent record over this course and distance, with two wins and a third from four starts.
His most recent win came five runs back over this track and trip, where he also recorded a track record.
Rachel King replaces Jordan Childs and from a favourable draw with a light weight, he gets every chance.
It was always going to be difficult for NOW IS THE HOUR (9) after drawing the outside barrier last start, but he still produced a strong effort.
The Tony Gollan-trained gelding was forced to cover ground throughout, racing three-wide and over-racing at stages, yet still stuck on well to finish 1.61 lengths third.
He returns to Eagle Farm where he has an excellent record, boasting two wins and a third from four attempts over this course and distance.
A much kinder draw this time should allow Tommy Berry to settle closer in the run.
FLYING DESTINY (2) is in outstanding form and is chasing a fifth consecutive victory.
After putting together back-to-back benchmark wins, the Michael Freedman-trained gelding stepped up in grade to take out the Bat Out Of Hell at the Gold Coast, defeating previous winner Steady Ready.
He then showed his determination last start in the Listed Chief De Beers, overcoming an outside barrier to score again.
Jamie Melham remains unbeaten aboard him and should have him positioned just off what looks a genuine speed.
GLENORCHY (6) indicated he would appreciate further when finishing fifth over 1200m at Randwick on debut.
The Chris Waller-trained colt worked home well over the final stages to finish 3.8 lengths off the winner.
With that effort in mind, the step up in trip second-up looks ideal.
He is drawn to enjoy an economical run for Tommy Berry.
A win would boost his chances of securing a spot in the Ladbrokes JJ Atkins next Saturday.
MISS FREELOVE (5) returns to Queensland for the first time since her victory in the Sunlight Consolation at the Gold Coast in January.
The Peter Snowden-trained filly had little luck when resuming but bounced back impressively last start, finishing strongly to win the Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes at Scone in a narrow result.
She was a month between runs there and will strip fitter again third-up.
With good speed expected, Tim Clark should settle in a forward position from the inside draw.
PINITO (2) returns to Eagle Farm for the first time since going down narrowly in last year’s Group 1 Queensland Oaks.
The Chris Waller-trained mare looks well placed after a strong win in the Group 3 Magic Millions Fillies And Mares Mile at Doomben last start.
That was her second victory at the mile this preparation, having also won second-up in the Group 3 Aspirational Quality at Randwick.
She was six weeks between runs last start and should take improvement from that effort.
She meets many of the same runners better at the weights and Ben Melham gets his chance from a low draw.
HARRY’S YACHT (5) returned in strong fashion this preparation, going down narrowly to King Of Roseau in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes.
The Corstens & Larkin-trained gelding then settled well back from a wide draw in the Group Ladbrokes BRC Sprint before finishing strongly into a neck third.
While 1600m has tested him previously, the drop back to 1500m looks ideal.
He will strip fitter third-up and should receive every favour from barrier 2.
PANOVA (1) is attempting to emulate Egg Tart by completing the Australasian Oaks/Queensland Oaks double.
The Chris Waller-trained filly stormed home to claim the Group 1 Australasian Oaks by just under a length.
Following that win, she has trialled and produced a pleasing effort while working comfortably.
She also brings two Group 3 victories into this race and is well weighted, sitting 12 rating points clear of her nearest rival.
From her draw, she should not have to do any work in the run.
This looks a wide-open race to finish the card.
ZOU SENSATION (4) resumed in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone, finding the front with a furlong to run before fitness gave out late and he finished 2.81 lengths fifth.
The Corstens & Larkin-trained gelding has a strong second-up profile, winning three of seven, including a victory at Caulfield last preparation over this distance.
Declan Bates should be able to settle in the first few pairs and give him a good run on speed.
