Run over 1,400 metres, the Tattersall’s Tiara is a Group 1 race taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse. With an $700,000 prize purse, it attracts the best local fillies and mares on race day.
The final Group 1 race of the season in Australia, the Tattersall’s Tiara is held at the end of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival in July each year and is a weight-for-age race for fillies and mares.
During reconstruction at Eagle Farm Racecourse, the race has recently taken place at both the Gold Coast as well as Doomben Racecourse.
The Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes is the best lead-up race into the Tattersall’s Tiara and Invincibella (2019) was the last mare to do the double.
In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic seriously interrupted the Queensland and Brisbane Winter Racing Carnivals forcing the abandonment of a number of races including the Tattersall’s Tiara.
Runners may also come via a run in Queensland’s richest race – the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) held at the same track and distance a fortnight earlier. Three mares throughout history have completed the Stradbroke Handicap – Tattersall’s Tiara double with Dane Ripper (1997), Srikandi (2015) and Tofane (2021).
The Tattersall’s Tiara also now serves as a potential guide to the spring’s $2 million The Invitation (1400m), an invitation-only event for fillies and mares run in October at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
In 2024 the Tatt’s Tiara was won by subsequent The Everest winning mare Bella Nipotina.
