Run over 1,400 metres, the Stradbroke Handicap is a Group 1 race taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse. With a $3,000,000 prize purse as of 2022, it attracts the absolute cream of the crop of local sprinting talent.
The 2020 edition of the Stradbroke Handicap offered a reduced $350,000 in prize money as the racing industry continued to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic before returning to $1.5 million in 2021 and then doubled to $3 million ahead of the 2023 event.
This race’s namesake is Lord Stradbroke, a famous Queenslander who has familial ties to the inventor of the thoroughbred weight for age scale system.
Many star sprinters have won the Stradbroke Handicap over the years including Rough Habit (1991-92), Dane Ripper (1997) and more recently Trekking (2019).
The Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) run a fortnight prior now serves as the key Stradbroke Handicap lead-up. In 2021 the Kingsford-Smith Cup winner Vega One went on to run second to Tofane in the Stradbroke Handicap results.
Think About It (2023) is the last sprinter to complete the Kingsford Smith Cup – Stradbroke Handicap double.
The 2022 Stradbroke Handicap winner Alligator Blood continued on to win a host of other Group 1 races interstate including the Underwood Stakes and VRC Champions Mile in Melbourne that spring. That year’s Stradbroke runner-up Private Eye further franked the form in Sydney with a The Everest second and $3 million Winners Stakes victory.
The 2023 Stradbroke Handicap also produced that spring’s $20 million The Everest winner with Think About It doing the double.
In 2024 Stefi Magnetica became the first three-year-old Stradbroke Handicap winning filly since 2006. She would go on to win the following year’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile in Sydney at Randwick in 2025.
In 2026 the event runs as the Ladbrokes Stradbroke Handicap for sponsorship purposes.
