The Doncaster Mile is one of the premier Australian mile races, held at Royal Randwick Racecourse over 1600m on a Saturday in early April as part of Sydney’s lucrative ‘The Championships’ races.
A time-honoured handicap event, the race was formerly known as the Doncaster Handicap and has been run and won since 1866.
Many turf greats have won the Doncaster Mile including in recent history Super Impose (1990, 1991) who also won the Epsom Handicap in the spring twice, Sunline (1999, 2002), and the brilliant mare Winx (2016).
Popular cult horse Happy Clapper (2018) holds the current Doncaster Mile race record for his win in 1:33.17 and the legendary TJ Smith holds the trainers record having prepared seven champions.
The Doncaster Mile winner is exempt from ballot for the $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) the following weekend.
Mr Brightside coming off a lead-up win in The All-Star Mile became the latest dual Doncaster Mile winner when successfully defending his title in 2023.
In 2026, Sheza Alibi completed the Randwick Guineas / Doncaster Mile double and became the first Doncaster Mile winning filly since Sunline (1999).

Which Horse Will Win the Doncaster Mile?
The best way to pick which horse will win the Doncaster Mile in 2026 is to take into account their lead-up autumn racing form, assess the barriers, consider the weight the horse will carry under the handicap conditions, and look for the proven Group 1 performers.
Additional factors to consider when picking the Doncaster Mile winner include:
- Wide Barriers: From 2009-2026, nine of the 18 Doncaster Mile winning horses jumped from barrier 10 (or wider), most recently Sheza Alibi (barrier 13 in 2026).
- Waller Factor: Trainer Chris Waller has an excellent recent record in the event preparing the four winners from 2013-16. He has won the race a total of six times, one outside the Doncaster Mile training record co-held by Tommy Smith and his daughter Gai Waterhouse.
- Group 1 Lead-Up: From 2004 – 2026 only four Doncaster Mile winners came off a non-Group 1 lead-up with Triple Honour (2008) running sixth in the Hobartville Stakes It’s Somewhat (2017) having won the Group 2 Ajax Stakes victory, Mr Brightside improving on his fourth in The All-Star Mile in Melbourne in 2022, and Mr Brightside again in 2023 who defended his Doncaster title after a lead-up All-Star Mile victory at The Valley.
Doncaster Mile Favourites 2026
Favourites in 2026 Doncaster Mile betting at time of publish include Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman’s airborne Randwick Guineas winning Saxon Warrior filly Sheza Alibi chasing her fifth win on the trot, the rails-drawn Chris Waller-trained Rosehill Guineas champ Autumn Boy and his class stablemate Sixties coming off a Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes win.
Doncaster Mile favourites have a poor recent record with Mr Brightside ($6 in 2023) the first since Winx (2016) to salute for the punters.
Sheza Alibi ($1.90 in 2026) was the last Doncaster Mile favourite to win.
