Run over 1,600 metres, the J.J. Atkins is a Group 1 race for two-year-olds taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in early to mid-June as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
The mile feature draws a quality field of juveniles each season and as of 2021 offers $1 million in prize money. A key support act on Stradbroke Handicap Day, the J.J. Atkins has been run and won since 1893.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the prize money for the 2020 J.J. Atkins was cut to $350,000 and the distance to 1400m before returning to the mile distance in 2021 and the prize money boosted to $1 million.
The race serves as the perfect target for graduates out of the $1 million Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) held a fortnight earlier and Sizzling (2012) followed by the filly Sheeza Belter (2022), the Godolphin-raced Broadsiding (2024) and local star Cool Archie (2025) are the latest to do the double.
Many top horses have won the J.J. Atkins over the years during their two-year-old seasons including in recent years The Autumn Sun (2018), Rothfire (2020), and Broadsiding (2024).
