Rob Heathcote’s eight-year-old local Queenslander Rothfire ($61) capped his remarkable comeback by storming home to win score a shock one-length victory in the 2026 Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 results on Saturday delivering Queensland a long-awaited hometown triumph in the sprinting feature. Given a patient ride by Brad Rawiller who flew to Brisbane especially for the ride, Rothfire stormed home from sixth to first on the home straight to beat Spicy Martini with Napoleonic in third.

Run over 1,200 metres, the Doomben 10,000 is a Group 1 race taking place at Doomben Racecourse each Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. Since a change to the Winter line-up in Queensland back in 2017, the Doomben 10,000 is now the opening elite level of the festival and runs on a Saturday in mid-May.
With an increased prize purse of $1,500,000 from 2023, the weight-for-age event now serves as a key lead-up into the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm a fortnight later.
The Bostonian (2019) from New Zealand was the last galloper to do the Doomben 10,000 – Kingsford Smith Cup double, winning the former at a blowout price of 40/1. In 2022 Paulele ran second in both the Doomben 10,000 and Kingsford Smith Cup results that winter. He would also return in the summer heading west to win the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth.
Run and won since 1933 the event has been one by plenty of stars over the years including the great heavyweight champion Bernborough (1946), super sprinter Manikato (1979), dual hero Apache Cat (2008-9), the mighty Redzel (2017) and Eduardo (2021).
In 2022 the Doomben 10,000 ran at Eagle Farm Racecourse and was won by Mazu who returned in the spring to finish in the money in a host of big Sydney races including a third in The Everest behind Giga Kick.
The Everest winning three-year-old Giga Kick went on to win the 2023 Doomben 10,000 to move to number nine on the all-time Australian Racing Prizemoney list.
In 2024 Bella Nipotina narrowly won to become the first Doomben 10,000 winning mare since English back in 2018. She went on to win the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara that campaign before a spring carnival headlined by her $20 million The Everest victory.
Sunshine In Paris (2025) became the latest Doomben 10,000 winning mare with her win for the punters having saluted in the previous year’s Group 1 Champions Sprint at Flemington.
In 2026, Robert Heathcote’s local champ Rothfire went one better than his second in the 2025 event to score a massive boilover at $61 securing his first Group 1 since the JJ Atkins 2,170 days earlier.
