Caulfield Guineas
Looking for this year’s Caulfield Guineas betting tips, race form, odds and info on how to bet on the Caulfield Guineas in 2024? The expert tipsters at Neds have put together everything you need to know.
The Caulfield Guineas is a Group 1 race for three-year-olds conducted over a mile (1600m) in mid-October during the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
A set weights clash offering $3 million in prize money, the Caulfield Guineas is open to fillies but rarely attracted the female gallopers who instead contested the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) the following Wednesday.
In 2023 the Thousand Guineas moved to late November giving fillies a chance at the double.
A good lead up race to this event is the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, a Group 3 race run at 1400 metres and occurring two weeks before the Caulfield Guineas. Helmet (2011) was the last horse to complete the Caulfield Guineas Prelude – Caulfield Guineas double. It is important to note that since Helmet in 2011 only three subsequent Caulfield Guineas winners have had a lead-up run in the Prelude race.
Regarded one of the key stallion-making races for three-year-olds the Caulfield Guineas has been won by many great horses throughout history including the likes of Ajax (1937), Tulloch (1957), subsequent Cox Plate winning filly Surround (1976), Lonhro (2001), and more recently The Autumn Sun (2018).
Surround (1976) is one of four three-year-olds to have completed the Caulfield Guineas – Cox Plate double in a single season along with Star Affair (1965), Rajah Sahib (1968), and Red Anchor (1984).
Surround is also the last Caulfield Guineas winning filly with most now opting to take on their own kind in the Thousand Guineas.
Horses out of the Caulfield Guineas many continue on to run in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) late in the spring during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Sixteen have done the double most recently Helenus (2002).
The best three-year-olds out of the Caulfield Guineas often continue on to contest that spring’s Group 1 $5 million Cox Plate (2040m). In 2021 the Caulfield Guineas winner Anamoe went down in a devastatingly close finish to State Of Rest in that year’s Cox Plate before returning to win the 2022 Cox Plate as a four-year-old.

WHICH HORSE WILL WIN THE caulfield guineas IN 2024?
Which horse will win the 2024 Caulfield Guineas comes down to a number of key form factors including the barriers, form over the 1600m distance, their lead-up form in Melbourne and their previous Group 1 race experience.
When selecting the Caulfield Guineas winner it is also important to consider:
- Interstate Invaders: Horses trained in Sydney have come to dominate this race in previous years.
- Lucky Barrier: It seems that barrier one gives an advantage, as quite a few recent winners have jumped from it. Barriers 1-5 have produced 22 of the 35 most recent Caulfield Guineas winners up until 2024 most recently with Private Life (barrier 5 in 2024). Griff however overcame barrier 15 of 15 to win the 2023 edition.
- Hot Leads: The Stan Fox Stakes – now run over a mile as the $1 million Callander-Presnell after the Caulfield Guineas – has been responsible for sending a lot of winners into this race. Also worth considering is the Golden Rose. Ole Kirk (2020) was the last horse to complete the Golden Rose Stakes – Caulfield Guineas double. Golden Mile (4th in 2022) was the last Golden Rose graduate to back-up and win the Caulfield Guineas. Golden Mile also went on to become the first horse to do the Caulfield Guineas – Callander-Presnell double.
caulfield guineas FAVOURITES 2024
Favourites in Caulfield Guineas betting for 2024 include first-up Golden Rose winner Broadsiding chasing his fourth career Group 1 success, the Clinton McDonald-trained Prelude winner Angel Capital after the double, and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Golden Rose third placegetter Mayfair.
The Autumn Sun ($1.75 in 2018), Ole Kirk ($4.20 in 2020), Anamoe ($2.10 in 2021) and Golden Mile ($2.70 in 2022) are the latest Caulfield Guineas favourites to win. Both The Autumn Sun and Ole Kirk won Sydney’s Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes in the lead-up, while Anamoe ran second in the Golden Rose as the beaten favourite before atoning in Melbourne and his stablemate Golden Mile improved on a Golden Rose fourth to win the Group 1 in Melbourne.
From 1983 – 2024 14 favourites have won the Caulfield Guineas, while there was a notable upset in 2023 by Griff ($31).
