Thousand Guineas

A great Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies, the Thousand Guineas is the female counterpart to the Caulfield Guineas, sharing the same age and race distance (1600m). Contested over a mile at Caulfield Racecourse each Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Thousand Guineas is run at set weights and offers $1.5 million in prize money.

It was previously contested on the Wednesday after the Caulfield Guineas, but in 2023 moved to after the Melbourne Cup Carnival and for two years took place in mid-November on Spring Champion Stakes Day.  In 2025 the Thousand Guineas moved back to its October timeslot joining the Caulfield Cup Day card.

Sydney’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) serves as a key interstate lead-up into the Thousand Guineas. Global Glamour (2016) was the last filly to complete the interstate Flight Stakes – Thousand Guineas double

The Thousand Guineas Prelude is the other key lead-up into the time-honoured Group 1 feature, but the double hasn’t been achieved since Irish Lights (2009).

Which Horse Will Win the Thousand Guineas in 2026?

Which filly will win the 2026 Thousand Guineas comes down to a number of key form factors including the barriers, form over the 1600m distance, their lead-up form in Melbourne and their previous Group 1 race experience.

When selecting the Thousand Guineas winner it is also important to consider:

  • Inside Alleys – Since 2006 just two Thousand Guineas winners have jumped from wider than gate nine.
  • Best Lead Up – Placegetters out of the Flight Stakes in Sydney and the Thousand Guineas Prelude in Melbourne make the best bet in the Thousand Guineas field. The Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington is another key lead-up and Amphitrite (2018) was the last to do the double. In 2021 Yearning improved on a lead-up second in the Edward Manifold to win the Thousand Guineas at 25/1.
