The 2026 WA Oaks meeting was abandoned after Racing WA called off the full Ascot card scheduled for Saturday, 28 March, with 27mm of rain already fallen and up to 35mm more forecast as the remnants of Cyclone Narelle swept across Perth, forcing the Oaks and Melvista Stakes to be moved to the following Wednesday.
Currently held in late March or early April at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse, the Group 3 WA Oaks is a 2400m staying test for three-year-old fillies.

It boasts a rich history, dating back to its inauguration in 1953.
Unlike many races that gain prestige over time, the WA Oaks has seen a gradual decrease in its Group status, transitioning from a Principal Race (1953-1978) to Group 1 (1979-1991), Group 2 (until 2006), and finally its current Group 3 classification.
Despite this, the race offers a significant $300,000 in prize money and remains a key event on the Western Australian autumn racing calendar, coinciding with Randwick’s Doncaster Mile Day card in 2025.
The WA Oaks attracts a strong field of fillies with proven ability over staying distances of 2000m plus.
Many contenders emerge from similar Perth races, with the Listed Natasha Stakes (2200m) serving as the traditional lead-up.
Recent winners Tuscan Queen (2020), She’s Fit (2023), Own The Queen (2024), and Machine Gun Gracie (2025) completed this double.
In 2026, Wonderfully Made improved on her lead-up third in the Natasha Stakes to win the WA Oaks by over four lengths as the short-priced favourite.
After the WA Oaks, some top fillies may choose to challenge the boys in the following month’s Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) over the same track and distance.
Delicacy (2015) recently did the WA Oaks – WATC Derby double and even went on to win the prestigious Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) and SA Derby (2500m) double in Adelaide.
Machine Gun Gracie (2025) was the last filly to complete the WA Oaks / WATC Derby double.
