Run over 1,300 metres in late February or early March, the Liverpool City Cup is a Group 3 race, held during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. With a $250,000 prize purse and open to horses over three years old and is part of the Verry Elleegant Stakes Day (formerly Chipping Norton Stakes Day) card at Royal Randwick.
The quality handicap event serves as a potential lead-up to the $4 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m), a race the 2019 Liverpool City Cup winner Dreamforce ran second in that season. The Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) is another potential April target for Liverpool City Cup graduates and in 2022 the Liverpool City Cup winner Ellsberg ran second in the All Aged Stakes.
In 2021 the Liverpool City Cup winner Think It Over went on to win a host of subsequent top-level races including that autumn’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
The following year the 2022 Liverpool City Cup winner Ellsberg returned in the spring to win the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), $1 million Five Diamond Prelude and $2 million The Five Diamonds.
The 2023 Liverpool City Cup form was firmly franked with the winner Think About It taking out the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup – Stradbroke Handicap double in Brisbane that winter before a big spring headlined by victory in the world’s richest turf race, the $20 million The Everest.
The 2025 Liverpool City Cup proved a strong form reference, with winner Iowna Merc backing it up at his very next run to take out the Group 2 Ajax Stakes. The race stacked up even further when third placegetter Gringotts returned later that autumn to capture the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes.
