Run over 1,200 metres in late January or early February at Caulfield Racecourse, the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes attracts a variety of older mares from around Australia many of which are kicking off their Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival campaigns.
It was formerly run at Caulfield in mid-February but was moved a week earlier ahead of the 2023 edition.
Starting out as a Listed Race, this race was upgraded to Group 3 in 2007 and currently offers $200,000 in prize money.
If a horse does well in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes, they are likely to enter the Mannerism Stakes, taking place on Blue Diamond Stakes Day. Tuscan Sling (2016) is the latest mare officially listed as having taken out the Geoffrey Bellmaine – Mannerism Stakes double after being awarded the latter victory after the original first-past-the-post (Azkadellia) was disqualified due to the Peter Foster / Ben Connolly ownership saga.
In 2022 the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes runner-up Flying Mascot won the Mannerism Stakes and then the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) at her next two starts.
