Run over 1,600 metres in late February or early March annually on Australian Guineas Day, the Group 2 Blamey Stakes takes place during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

With a $300,000 prize purse, the set weights plus penalties event is open to runners aged three and above and has been won by plenty of nice types over the years including recent dual champion Fifty Stars (2019, 2020). 

The Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) held on Blue Diamond Stakes Day serves as a nice lead-up into the Blamey Stakes and many horses have enjoyed a step back in grade to salute in the mile event after contesting the Futurity. 

The Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) run at Flemington on ‘Super Saturday’ makes a nice target race for horses out of the Blamey Stakes field and Fifty Stars (2020) was the last to do the double.

In 2021 the Blamey Stakes winner Star Of The Seas earned a start in the then $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m) and finished sixth.

The 2022 Blamey Stakes form was franked with the second placed Zaaki winning The All-Star Mile next start.

The 2026 Blamey Stakes runs as the key support act on 2026 Australian Guineas Day at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday, February 28, 2026. There are two Group races on the card that day at HQ headlined by the Group 1 $1 million Australian Guineas (1600m) for three-year-olds as well as the $1 million Inglis Sprint (1200m) for three-year-old Inglis graduates.
