Run over 1,100 metres each March at Rosehill Gardens, the Group 1 The Galaxy is the feature sprint race on Golden Slipper Day in Sydney.
With a $1,000,000 prize purse as of 2023, the event is a popular short-distance showdown every autumn and makes a nice target for graduates out of the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m). Eduardo (2021) was the last sprinter to complete the Challenge Stakes – The Galaxy double.
Following The Galaxy race, many horses may continue onto Randwick’s Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) during April’s ‘The Championships’. The Galaxy winner is in fact exempt from ballot for the TJ Smith Stakes each autumn.

The Galaxy Race Day 2024
The Galaxy 2024 takes place as part of Golden Slipper Day on Saturday, the 23rd of March, 2024 at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse that features a nearly all-Black-Type card of eight Group races and a Listed event. Along with the The Galaxy the other Group 1 races on the program are the:
- Group 1 $4,920,000 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m),
- Group 1 $1,000,000 George Ryder Stakes (1500m),
- Group 1 $1,000,000 Ranvet Stakes (2000m), and the
