Run over 1,200 metres, this is a Group 2 race taking place at Doomben Racecourse in early May as the key support act on Doomben 10,000 Day. The set weights sprint offers $300,000 in prize money and is open only to two-year-old runners.
In 2020 the Champagne Classic also took place at Eagle Farm Racecourse offering a reduced $175,000 in prize money and ran on same card as the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) due to the COVID-10 pandemic.
This race serves as a good guide to the upcoming Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) held at Eagle Farm over the mile and Rothfire (2020) and Cool Archie (2025) were the latest two-year-olds to do the double.
From 1982 to 1986, the race was run as a Listed Race. From 1987, it was held as a Group 3 race, before being upgraded to Group 2 in 2006.
In 2021 the event was renamed the Spirit Of Boom Classic to honour the 2014 Doomben 10,000 winner Spirit Of Boom and was won by one of his progeny, Prince Of Boom.
Cool Archie (2025) completed the Queensland 2YO Triple Crown completing the Spirit Of Boom Classic / BRC Sires’ / JJ Atkins treble.
