Run over 1,400 metres on a Friday in early March, the Newcastle Stakes – formerly known as the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap – is a Group 3 autumn race that attracts a quality line-up of middle-distance gallopers. 

Offering $250,000 in prize money as of 2024 the event serves as a nice lead-up to some of the tougher races run during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

The Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) run at Randwick the month before makes a nice lead-up into the race and Special Reward (2020) was the last to do the double.

The race is not to be confused with the time-honoured Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) feature sprint conducted the day after at Flemington on ‘Super Saturday’.

Some of the top horses out of the Newcastle Stakes (Newcastle Newmarket Handicap) field will go on to contest Group 1 races over the autumn and the form has held up in plenty of top events over the years. In 2021 Cascadian improved on a Newcastle Newmarket Handicap third to win that year’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick. He also went on to run first four in a further four Group 1 races over 2021.

The 2022 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap form was franked with the runner-up Nimalee winning the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) that autumn.
