Looking for this year’s The Ingham betting odds, field and form on the race formerly the known as the Villiers Stakes? The expert tipsters at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
The Ingham 2025 Tips
Our insider 2025 The Ingham tips will be published above the week of the race and a full betting preview available on the Neds Blog.
SABAJ (21) hasn’t exactly come up with the friendliest barrier in The Ingham, but I’m still giving this fast‑improving four‑year‑old plenty of respect. He’s been trending the right way all spring and looks ready to hit his peak now he’s fourth‑up.
He kicked off his prep with a solid sixth in the Silver Eagle, then really clicked on Champions Stakes Day at Flemington, lumping 59.5kg and still putting them away by two lengths over the mile. That win wasn’t a fluke either — he backed it up with a gritty Cranbourne Cup victory, thriving with the drop to 54kg.
He gets in even lighter this weekend at just 53kg, and with Beau Mertens sticking, that’s another big positive.
Sure, the wide draw isn’t ideal, but the favourite GRINGOTTS is also parked out there, and SABAJ has the engine to overcome it. If he gets any sort of cover, he’ll be one of the strongest closers in the race and can absolutely make things interesting late.

First held in 1982, the Villiers Stakes was renamed The Ingham ahead of the 2022 edition of the now $2 million summer feature.
The event has held Group 2 status for over 30 years and the 1600m feature takes place at Royal Randwick in mid-December annually.
After a huge boost in prize money from $750,000 in 2021 to $2 million in 2022, The Ingham also serves as a credible lead-up into the Summer Cup held over 2000m.
The Ingham winner also secures a ballot exemption into the following autumn’s iconic Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
The 2021 Villiers Stakes form was franked with the second placed Ellsberg returning the next year for a huge campaign that included a dead-heat victory in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap and his Five Diamonds Prelude – $2 million Five Diamonds double.

Five-year-old Snitzel gelding Yorkshire ($3.90F) confirmed his rising star status with a commanding win for the punters in Saturday’s 2025 The Ingham results at Randwick, stamping himself as one of the standout milers of the summer. The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton trained galloper, a last start Group 3 Festival Stakes winner, went around as the favourite and delivered exactly what punters expected, surging to the front in the straight and holding off Estadio Mestalla to score decisively. The victory not only added another feature win to his growing résumé but also secured him a coveted ballot-free spot in the following year’s Doncaster Mile, completing a remarkable turnaround after a setback earlier in the prep.
