The race formerly ran in late September on Moir Stakes Night before moving to the later position ahead of the 2023 edition and in 2024 is held on the same day as the $5 million Cox Plate.

Maldivian and El Segundo both won the Cox Plate during their careers, but not in the same year as their respective JRA Cup victories.

Ciaron Maher’s last start Naturalism runner-up, Future History, was given a confident ride by Mark Zahra who dictated and controlled the race from barrier to box before drawing away over the closing stages to dominate the 2024 JRA Cup results on Cox Plate Day and salute by 1.5 lengths with Maher training the first four over the line!
