Run over 1,600 metres the John F Feehan Stakes is a Group 2 race traditionally taking place at Moonee Valley Racecourse in September. The race was formerly known as the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (2005-18) in honour of Malaysian racehorse owner Dato’ Tan Chin Nam who had a famous association with the iconic ‘Cups King’ Bart Cummings.
The 2026 John F. Feehan Stakes ran on a Sunday in late September at Caulfield Racecourse with The Valley under redevelopment.
With a $500,000 prize purse, the weight-for-age feature attracts a quality line-up of gallopers heading towards the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) back at the track in October. Whobegotyou (2009) was the last horse to complete the John F Feehan Stakes – Cox Plate double.
Previously, horses may have backed-up out of the John F. Feehan Stakes in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield, a double recently achieved by Bonneval (2017). More recently, dual Cox Plate place-getter Humidor won the John F. Feehan Stakes in his first run for Chris Waller before a second in that year’s Underwood Stakes results. Since 2024 the Feehan Stakes has run after the Underwood Stakes.
In 2021 the John F Feehan Stakes winner Superstorm continued on to run third in the Underwood Stakes and Toorak Handicap, then won the Cantala Stakes – now known as the Champions Mile – that spring.
The 2024 Feehan Stakes proved to be a key form guide for later Group 1 races. The winner, Pride Of Jenni, went on to run a strong second in Sydney’s $5 million King Charles III Stakes. The runner-up, Mr Brightside, also had a successful campaign, which included a victory in the Group 1 Champions Mile. Further validating the race’s quality, the third-place finisher Antino traveled to Brisbane the following winter to claim the Group 1 Doomben Cup.
Pride Of Jenni was brilliant in 2025, surging clear to become the race’s sixth dual winner and stamping the Feehan form as elite when she later claimed the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes. The runner‑up Treasurethe Moment backed it up with a top‑class spring of her own, delivering Group 1 placings in the Might And Power, Cox Plate and Champions Mile to further validate the strength of the race.
In 2026, Pride Of Jenni returned first-up as a nine-year-old to claim an historic Feehan Stakes three-peat.
