The W.H. Stocks Stakes is a race for mares aged four-years-old and above run on Manikato Stakes Day in late September each Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and traditionally held at Moonee Valley.
The 2026 Stocks Stakes runs on a Sunday in late September at Caulfield Racecourse with The Valley under redevelopment.
A Group 2 event offering $300,000 in prize money, the W.H. Stocks Stakes is often simply referred to as the Stocks Stakes and is conducted over 1600m (1514m in 2024 and 1500m in 2025) at set weights plus penalties.
The race was first run in 1973 and has been won by a number of quality mares including Atlantic Jewel (2013) and Princess Jenni (2019).
Mares may use the Stocks Stakes as a lead-up to the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) run at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Derby Day.
Pride Of Jenni ran second in the 2023 Stocks Stakes before completing the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes – Champions Mile double on successive Saturdays at Flemington that Melbourne Cup Carnival.
In 2023 Amelia’s Jewel saluted as the odds-on favourite setting a new track record of 1 minute 34.37 seconds over the 1600m.
The WA-trained mares went back-to-back with Alsephina successful the following year in a slick 1 minute 32.33 seconds but over a lesser distance of 1514m.
Pride Of Jenni was outstanding in 2025, surging clear to secure her second Stocks Stakes victory and later confirming that form with a Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes triumph. The runner‑up Abounding also kept the race’s credibility high, stepping out next start to claim the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes.
