Looking for early info on this year’s Doomben Cup? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.

Run over 2,000 metres, the Doomben Cup is a Group 1 race taking place at Doomben Racecourse during May as part of the popular Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival*. With a $1,000,000 prize purse, the weight-for-age showdown attracts a quality field each year and has been won by plenty of quality horses since its inauguration in 1933.

Note: The rescheduled 2022 Doomben Cup runs over 2100m at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday May 28, 2022 on Queensland Derby Day having been moved due to heavy rainfall.

The Gold Coast’s Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) held a fortnight prior is the key form race to follow into the Doomben Cup results and classy mare Streama (2014) followed by runaway seven-length champion of the latter Zaaki (2021) are the latest to do the double. Zaaki returned in 2022 having won the Hollindale for the second time, but only managed to run third in the Doomben Cup trifecta as the beaten $1.24 favourite behind Huetor.

The best out of the Doomben Cup field are likely to target a run on Stradbroke Handicap Day in the new-look $1.2 million Group 2 The Q22 (2200m). Zaaki would also go on to win The Q22 in 2022 completing the Hollindale – Doomben Cup – The Q22 treble.

From 1933 to 1979, the race was run as a Principal Race. Ever since 1980, it has held and maintained Group 1 status.

Which Horse Will Win The Doomben Cup in 2022

The best way to pick which horse will win the Doomben Cup in 2022 is to take into account their lead-up winter racing form, assess the barriers, look for the proven weight-for-age stars and those with past Group 1 experience.

Additional factors to consider when picking the Doomben Cup winner include:

  • Best Age – Four year olds have the best record when it comes to tackling the full 2,000 metres of this track.
  • Best Lead Up – The AD Hollindale Stakes produced eleven Doomben Cup winners from 2007-2022 most recently Zaaki (2021) doing the double followed by Huetor (4th in 2022).
  • Avoid Mares – Reaching back further than 30 years worth of the Doomben Cup, mares have only take out the top spot three times most recently in 2019 with Kenedna.

Doomben Cup Favourites 2022

Early favourites in 2022 Doomben Cup betting include last year’s champion Zaaki and Chris Waller’s smart mare Polly Grey coming off a placing behind Zaaki in the Hollindale Stakes.

Zaaki ($2.25 in 2021) is the latest Doomben Cup favourite to win and the first since Streama (2014). Zaaki returned as the $1.24 Doomben Cup favourite in 2022 but ran third behind the $16 winner Huetor.
