The Caulfield Cup is a $5 million Group 1 race for stayers conducted over 2,400m each October as part of the famous Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Currently run under handicap conditions, the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) are in the process of changing the Caulfield Cup conditions to weight-for-age.

A key lead up to the Melbourne Cup, the Caulfield Cup is essential viewing for anyone planning to bet on “the race that stops a nation.”

Eleven champion horses have completed the coveted “Spring Cups” double winning both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup races in the same year, the latest being star New Zealand mare Ethereal in 2001.

Horses can automatically qualify for a spot in the Caulfield Cup field via a win in three earlier events the Toorak HandicapHerbert Power Stakes and the Mornington Cup.

Five horses throughout history have completed the Toorak Handicap – Caulfield Cup double in a single season, but not since Leilani (1974).

There have been seven dual Caulfield Cup winners with the last being Ming Dynasty (1977, 1980).

In 2020 the Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant became the 22nd mare to win the Caulfield Cup.

In 2022 Waller prepared his second Caulfield Cup winner with Durston making history as the first ever emergency to gain a run and go on to win.

The 2022 Caulfield Cup form was franked with the second-placed stayer Gold Trip winning that year’s Melbourne Cup.

Gold Trip returned carrying the 58.5kg top-weight in the 2023 Caulfield Cup to run third behind Without A Fight (1st) and West Wind Blows (2nd).

which horse will win the 2023 CAULFIELD CUP

When looking at which horse will win the Caulfield Cup in 2023 it is crucial to consider form indicators like the lead-up runs of the contenders, their experience over the mile and a half distance and the weight each runner is allocated.

Other important factors to determine the Caulfield Cup winner include:

  • Skip The Mares – Just three mares have won the Caulfield Cup since 2001 most recently Verry Elleegant (2020).
  • Turnbull Lead-Up – The Turnbull Stakes held over 2000m earlier in the spring has produced plenty of recent Caulfield Cup winners including Verry Elleegant (2020) and Incentivise (2021) who are the latest to do the double.
  • Four-Years-Old Factor – Four-year-old horses have an excellent record in the Caulfield Cup.

Caulfield Cup FAVourites 2023

The early 2023 Caulfield Cup favourites include the progressive Chris Waller-trained import Soulcombe who ran third in the Turnbull Stakes last start, the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained European raider West Wind Blows who was second in the same key lead-up when debuting down under, Ciaron Maher & David Eustace’s upset Turnbull champ Gold Trip who enjoyed his first win since last year’s Melbourne Cup, and the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Without A Fight bringing in slightly different form lines.

Favourites in Caulfield Cup betting saluted five times from 2007 – 2021. Jamkea ($4.25 in 2016), Verry Elleegant ($5 in 2020) and Incentivise ($2.30 in 2021) are the latest Caulfield Cup favourites to win.

There was a notable upset in the 2022 Caulfield Cup with Durston winning at $18, while the favourite Smokin’ Romans ($3.90) never got into the clear running just over two lengths back in a luckless seventh.

In 2023 the Caulfield Cup favourite at time of jump was UK raider West Wind Blows ($5.50) who finished second after a thrilling battle to the line with his former stablemate, the now Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Without A Fight ($8.50).
