The Caulfield Cup is a $5 million Group 1 race for stayers conducted over 2,400m each October as part of the famous Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
A key lead-up to the Melbourne Cup, the Caulfield Cup is essential viewing for anyone planning to bet on “the race that stops a nation.”
Twelve champion horses have completed the coveted “Spring Cups” double winning both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup races in the same year, the latest being Without A Fight in 2023.
Five horses throughout history have completed the Toorak Handicap – Caulfield Cup double in a single season, but not since Leilani (1974).
There have been seven dual Caulfield Cup winners with the last being Ming Dynasty (1977, 1980).
In 2020 the Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant became the 22nd mare to win the Caulfield Cup.
In 2022 Waller prepared his second Caulfield Cup winner with Durston making history as the first ever emergency to gain a run and go on to win.
The 2022 Caulfield Cup form was franked with the second-placed stayer Gold Trip winning that year’s Melbourne Cup.

There was a notable upset in the 2022 Caulfield Cup with Durston winning at $18, while the favourite Smokin’ Romans ($3.90) never got into the clear running just over two lengths back in a luckless seventh.

The 2025 Caulfield Cup Carnival incorporates three separate race days with Caulfield Guineas Day, Blue Sapphire Stakes Day and Caulfield Cup Day.
Caulfield Cup Race Day 2025
Race day takes place on Saturday the 18th of October 2025. Six Group status races take place on 2025 Caulfield Cup Day with the feature event accompanied on the card by the:
- Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) moved back from November to October ahead of the 2025 edition,
- Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m),
- Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m),
- Group 3 Neds Classic (2000m),
- Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m), and the
- Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m).
In 2025 Caulfield Cup Day runs on the same date as Sydney’s The Everest Day card that features the $20 million The Everest race along with the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m) which replaced the George Main Stakes in 2023.
