Runners in the Strickland Stakes are likely to have come via earlier Perth lead-up runs in events including the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m), Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) and Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m). A time-honoured race run and won since 1901 the Strickland Stakes has been taken out by plenty of quality horses over the years including in recent years Scales Of Justice (2017), the aforementioned Material Man (2018, 2020), and Galaxy Star (2019).
In 2023 Dom To Shoot ran third in the Strickland Stakes before returning for a big summer when placing third again in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and winning the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) at Ascot.
The 2024 Strickland Stakes form was franked with the runner-up, Western Empire, going on to win the $1.5 million The Gold Rush that December.
