Joe Pride’s veteran eight-year-old Private Eye ($2.05) stormed home to salute in the 2025 Moonga Stakes results, reaffirming his class and adding another feature race to his glittering résumé. Ridden by Nash Rawiller, the former two-time The Everest placed Al Maher gelding proved too strong in the Group 3 event after settling just off the speed before cruising past the leaders and kicking clear to win by 1.5 lengths over Warnie and Steparty.

The race is contested at set weights plus penalties over 1400m and is open to horses aged four-years-old and upwards.
The Moonga Stakes was first contested 1988 and won by subsequent Australian Racing Hall of Famer Vo Rogue who won a plethora of Group 1 races over his career including the Australian Cup (1989, 1990) twice and the C.F. Orr Stakes (1988-1990) on three occasions.
The event was originally known as the Richard Ellis Plate (1988-1992) and has undergone a number of name changes before the current Moonga Stakes title from 2012 onwards.
The Moonga serves as a key lead-up to races like the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Boban (2013) was the last horse to complete the Moonga Stakes – Champions Mile (then Cantala Stakes) double.
Plenty of very good racehorses have won the Moonga Stakes over the years including the aforementioned inaugural champion Vo Rogue (1988), Rough Habit (1992), Boban (2013), Streets Of Avalon (2019), and former two-time The Everest placegetter Private Eye (2025).
