The Ming Dynasty Quality is a Group 3 handicap race held at Rosehill Gardens in mid-September as part of Sydney’s Run To The Rose Day card.
A key meeting held during the early stages of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the other feature races on the card include the: Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m), Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m).
Run over 1400m and offering $250,000 in prize money, the event is a quality handicap race open only to three-year-olds.
The race is named in honour of Ming Dynasty, a dual Caulfield Cup (1977, 1980) and Australian Cup (1978, 1980) champion.
It has been formerly known as both the D. Drainsfield Quality Handicap (1986-1992) and the Laing & Simmons Quality Handicap (1993) before being renamed the Ming Dynasty Quality in 1994.
The event gained Group 3 status in 2013 and serves as a potential lead-up to bigger races over the spring including the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose (1400m). In 2021 the Ming Dynasty Quality winner Coastwatch ran third in that year’s Golden Rose Stakes results.
The Ming Dynasty Quality also serves as a potential lead-up into Melbourne’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m). Golden Mile (2022) was the last horse to complete the Ming Dynasty – Caulfield Guineas double.
The 2024 Ming Dynasty Quality winner Lady Shenandoah firmly franked the form taking out her next four races on the trot including the Group 1 Flight Stakes and the 2025 Surround Stakes – Coolmore Classic double the following autumn.
