Apocalyptic ($5), trained by Michael Freedman, delivered a stunning first-up victory in the 2025 Furious Stakes results at Randwick on Saturday, overcoming a challenging lead-up that included a long spell due to a foot abscess and just one prior race start.
The maiden Extreme Choice filly surged through a narrow gap in the straight under Tommy Berry to win by a half-neck in a blanket finish, defeating Tupakara and Silver Shadow Stakes winner Savvy Hallie.
Freedman had considered a more conservative path but backed his instincts and Berry’s confidence, believing Apocalyptic had the class to compete at this level. The win confirmed her status as a top contender for the remaining legs of the Princess Series, with the Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and Flight Stakes (1600m) now firmly in her sights.

Run over 1,200 metres the Furious Stakes is a Group 2 race taking place at Randwick Racecourse in early September as part of the Chelmsford Stakes Day card. Offering $300,000 in prize money as of 2023 the event is open to three-year-old fillies only and is run at set weights.
The Furious Stakes is one of the events making up the spring’s Princess Series of races.
The first leg of the series for three-year-old fillies is August’s Silver Shadow Stakes followed by the Furious Stakes and Tea Rose Stakes. The Grand Final race concluding the series is the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on Epsom Handicap Day in October.
Speak Fondly (2015) was the last filly to complete the Furious Stakes – Flight Stakes double as a three-year-old.
The 2022 Furious Stakes form was franked with the third placed She’s Extreme going on to win that year’s Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
