Formerly known as the Royal Sovereign Stakes, the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint is a lucrative $1 million feature for three-year-olds run at Royal Randwick on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’ each Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Traditionally contested on the second Saturday in April (3rd in 2021 due to the Golden Slipper Day washout), the meeting is host to four Group 1 races plus a number of other support acts including the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint.
The set weights clash takes place over six furlongs (1200m) and often attracts a number of the same three-year-olds that contested the previous spring’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes down the Flemington straight in Melbourne.
Run and won since 1979 the event has been taken out by plenty of top runners including Lonhro (2002), Exceed And Excel (2004), Japonisme (2016), and Classique Legend (2019) who went on to win the next year’s The Everest.
The 2022 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint form was franked with the winner Mazu returning in the winter to take out Brisbane’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000 before a third in the then $15 million The Everest which is now worth $20 million.
