Stradbroke Day returns to Eagle Farm this Saturday, showcasing Queensland’s premier raceday. The surface is currently rated a Soft 7, and with showers forecast throughout the week, conditions are expected to remain testing.
The nine-race program is stacked with black-type contests, headlined by the $3 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Stradbroke Handicap. Last-start Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup winner Headley Grange has been installed as the early favourite in what shapes as a deep sprint.
The Group 1 J.J. Atkins headlines the juvenile ranks, while the Group 2 Q22 features a compelling clash between Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner Half Yours, Pride Of Jenni and She’s A Hustler.
With wet-track ability likely crucial across the day, here’s a full race-by-race breakdown.
YELLOW JERSEY (2) makes his Australian debut for the McEvoy stable bringing strong international credentials. The four-year-old gelding has won three of his four career starts and profiles as a horse with significant upside.
After winning his first three outings impressively, he stepped up to Group 2 level in the Prix Du Conseil De Paris where he led and was only run down late, finishing just over a half-length third behind Convergent and Dubai Honour.
That form is outstanding given Dubai Honour’s multiple Australian Group 1 wins. He also impressed in a recent Sunshine Coast trial, cruising to victory in heavy conditions.
With Mark Zahra engaged and a favourable barrier, he should get every opportunity.
MARFFIANO (1) kicked off his career with a win in the Ladbrokes Vobis Gold Rush at Bendigo two starts ago for Team Hayes.
He enjoyed a soft run just off the speed before finishing strongly to score by half a length.
At his latest outing in the Magic Millions National 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast, he was always facing a tough task against The Next Episode, but his fifth placing had merit after settling at the tail from a wide gate.
Now third-up, he strips fitter and is expected to settle more prominently with Mark Zahra aboard.
BELLA MONTAGNA (7) produced the standout run in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup over 2400m at Eagle Farm last start.
She closed strongly to finish a head second to Alalcance and was clearly in front 50 metres past the line, with third nearly six lengths away.
The Waterhouse & Bott-trained mare now meets the winner 3kg better at the weights.
Although stepping to 3200m for the first time, her previous dominant win over 2400m on a rain-affected Randwick track suggests the trip will suit.
Rachel King is likely to give her an economical run in transit.
Resuming in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic, WITHIN THE LAW (10) returned in excellent order with a third placing.
The Bjorn Baker-trained mare settled back from a wide draw before producing the fastest final 600m of the race, finishing within 1.75 lengths of the winner.
Second-up here, she should take improvement and is suited rising to 1600m, a trip she handled when finishing 1.18 lengths second in the Group 1 Flight Stakes.
From a better barrier, Tommy Berry can settle her closer.
PAYLINE (1) hasn’t won since the 2025 Magic Millions Syndicate, but his recent form suggests he is not far away.
Dropping back from Group company, he gets a suitable opportunity here.
Two starts ago in the Group 2 Victory Stakes, the Chris & Corey Munce-trained gelding found the line strongly on a rain-affected track, finishing 1.71 lengths second after being run down late by Splash Back.
Those conditions suit again, and while he carries a big weight, Nash Rawiller’s booking is a key positive.
SHE’S GOT PIZZAZZ (8) impressed last start in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes, storming home from well back to finish a neck second.
That followed a victory in the Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast over 1400m.
The Moody & Coleman-trained mare looks ideally suited back to 1300m, and the expected wet ground is in her favour.
Mark Zahra remains aboard and should position her off what looks a strong tempo.
TRON BOLT (4) has stamped himself as a leading contender for the J.J. Atkins following two dominant wins for trainer Chris Waller.
At Kensington over 1400m, he charged home after being held up to score by 2.95 lengths.
He then produced an even more impressive performance at Rosehill on heavy ground, putting his rivals away by 1.86 lengths.
That effort suggested he is looking for 1600m, which he gets here at peak fitness.
James McDonald takes the ride.
Joe Pride trains ESTADIO MESTALLA (11), who looks a genuine each-way chance in the Stradbroke Handicap.
He was last seen finishing fourth in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone, beaten 2.46 lengths after working home well.
He has an excellent third-up record and has had two trials leading into this.
The return of blinkers is significant, having led throughout to win by 1.49 lengths over this distance at Randwick when first applied.
Chad Schofield should have him settled prominently.
HALF YOURS (1) looks primed to bounce back hard in the Group 2 Q22, with the step up to 2200m and a rain-affected surface ticking the right boxes.
The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained gelding had his winning hopes undone in the Group 1 Doomben Cup when a move to improve down the back straight proved costly, but he still stuck on gamely to finish fourth, beaten 4.18 lengths, with Vauban finishing just in front of him.
Fourth-up is typically when he hits top gear, as seen last campaign when he claimed the Group 1 Caulfield Cup, so timing is ideal.
The sting out of the track is a major plus too, considering he’s unbeaten from one attempt on heavy ground and boasts four wins from seven starts on soft tracks.
