Named after Bill Stutt, the former chairman of the Moonee Valley Racing Club, this race was previously known as the Moonee Valley Stakes. Originally a Principal Race, this race was upgraded to Group 2 status in 1979.
This race serves as a reasonable lead up into the Caulfield Guineas. Whobegotyou (2008) followed by Griff (2023) are the last horses to do the Stutt Stakes – Caulfield Guineas double.

The 2024 Bill Stutt Stakes takes place as part of the Manikato Stakes Night at Moonee Valley Racecourse and is scheduled for Friday September 27, 2024.
