The Roman Consul Stakes is an important Group 2 sprint race currently run at Rosehill Gardens (moved from Royal Randwick in 2023) on Hill Stakes Day in early October each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
It was previously held a week earlier on Epsom Handicap Day but runs at the meeting that is now headlined by the Group 2 $2 million Hill Stakes (1900m).
Contested over 1200m and offering $300,000 in prize money, the race is run at set weights and is open only to three-year-olds.
The Roman Consul Stakes winner also earns a ballot exemption into the following autumn’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) held in the autumn.
The best horses out of the Roman Consul Stakes may head south to Melbourne for a shot at the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight on VRC Derby Day.
Brazen Beau (2014) and Switzerland (2024) are the latest young sprinters to complete the Roman Consul Stakes – Coolmore Stud Stakes double.
The 2020 Roman Consul Stakes winner Wild Ruler ran a next-up third in the Coolmore Stud Stakes trifecta and won the following year’s Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at The Valley.
