Headley Grange ($10) produced a gritty, wide-run victory in the 2025 $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes results at Rosehill, overcoming barrier 17 to defeat Gringotts and General Salute in a thrilling finish. Trained by Joe Pride and ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, the five-year-old Exosphere gelding was caught three-wide throughout the 1400m contest but surged late to claim his third consecutive win and 11th career victory from 22 starts. The son of Exosphere had previously won the Listed Civic Stakes and Group 3 Cameron Handicap, and he now adds a lucrative black-type triumph to his résumé. Pride praised the horse’s versatility and toughness, calling him “bombproof” and well-suited to the mile, while Hyeronimus credited the gelding’s progression and consistency, noting it was his sixth win aboard the rising star. The win sets Headley Grange up for a tilt at the $3 million Big Dance at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day, where he’s now early favourite.

The Alan Brown Stakes is a new event to run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse for the first time in 2023 on Hill Stakes Day during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
The event is named in honour of former Sydney Turf Club and Racing NSW Chairman, the late Alan Brown AM.
The lucrative showdown, while not currently holding Black-Type status, has $1.5 million in prize money on offer and is a quality handicap taking place over 1400m.
The Alan Brown Stakes is open to horses aged three-years-old and above, and it serves as a lead-up to the Group 1 $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m) held at Randwick on The Everest Day.
The qualified country-trained horses out of the Alan Brown Stakes race are also likely to target the $3 million The Big Dance (1600m) held in Sydney on the first Tuesday of November when Flemington hosts the time-honoured Melbourne Cup.
The first Alan Brown Stakes winner, Cepheus, franked the form with a Big Dance second that spring.
In 2024, Gringotts improved on his Alan Brown Stakes second to win that year’s The Big Dance – The Gong double as well as the Group 1 George Ryder in 2025 the following autumn.
Here To Shock meanwhile won the Alan Brown at double-figures before heading across the Tasman the following autumn to win New Zealand’s Group 1 BCD Group Sprint in February of 2025 before a Group 1 Canterbury Stakes second back in Sydney.
