Our insider tips on the 2026 Memsie Stakes will be detailed here the week of the Group 1 spring lead-up and a full Memsie Stakes Day betting preview available on the Neds Blog.

Memsie Stakes Winners & History - Neds.com.au.

The Group 1 Memsie Stakes, run over 1400m, is the opening elite level of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the second Group 1 races of the new racing season each year following the Group 1 Winx Stakes in Sydney.

Because of its early spring date, there is a lot of interest to see which horses will come back with a strong start after their winter spell.

Currently offering $750,000 in prize money, the Memsie Stakes has been won by plenty of class horses over the years including Sincero (2012), So You Think (2010), Weekend Hussler (2008), triple Melbourne Cup champion Makybe Diva (2005), and the most recent dual champion Sunline (2000, 2001).

In 2020 the Memsie Stakes winner Behemoth saluted for the punters before franking the form with a next-up win in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at the same track and distance.

Behemoth returned to successfully defend his title in 2021 become the first dual Memsie Stakes winner since Sunline (2000, 2001).

In 2023, star Lindsay Park galloper Mr Brightside became the latest horse and the first since Dissident in 2014 to complete the Memsie Stakes – Makybe Diva Stakes double.

Mr Brightside returned to run second in the 2024 Memsie Stakes before another Makybe Diva Stakes win at his next start.

Mr Brightside also ran second in the 2025 Memsie Stakes results in a brave but distant run behind the brilliant 2.5 length winner Treasurethe Moment who had won the VRC Oaks – ATC Oaks double as a filly the season prior.

Mr Brightside was brave again in 2025, chasing hard for a clear second behind the electric Treasurethe Moment, who stretched her unbeaten run to nine with a dominant first‑up win. He quickly proved the form by returning to Flemington and securing a third consecutive Makybe Diva Stakes. Treasurethe Moment’s spring only got stronger, adding Group 1 placings in the Might And Power and Cox Plate, while Buckaroo — third in 2025 — also held his own with top‑level seconds in the Underwood and Cox Plate, plus a placing in the Might And Power.

Which Horse Will Win the Memsie Stakes in 2026?

Which horse will win the 2026 Memsie Stakes comes down to a number of key form factors including the barriers, form over the 1400m distance and their previous Group 1 race experience.

When selecting the Memsie Stakes winner it is also important to consider:

  • Group 1 Grade – The majority of Memsie Stakes winners in recent history have had previous Group 1 race experience.
  • Bad Barriers – Very few horses have won the Memsie Stakes from a double-digit barrier in the past decade. Mr Brightside (14 in 2023) was the last to overcome a wide alley and win.
  • Favourite Backers – The top fancies in Memsie Stakes betting have an outstanding recent record in the event. Mr Brightside ($2.70 in 2023) was the last favourite to salute for the punters.
  • Adelaide Lead-Up: Two-time Memsie Stakes winner Behemoth (2020-21) came via a lead-up win in Adelaide’s Group 3 SAJC Spring Stakes (1200m) ahead of both of his victories.

Memsie Stakes Favourites 2026

Favourites in Memsie Stakes betting for 2026 will be updated here closer to the event.

Behemoth jumped at shorter odds ($3.20) for a successful title defence in 2021, but it was third-placed Tofane ($3) who was that year’s Memsie Stakes favourite.
