The Chelmsford Stakes is a Group 2 Sydney Spring Racing Carnival feature held at Royal Randwick at the start of September annually on the Saturday after the Wyong Gold Cup takes place on the first Friday in September.
The weight-for-age event takes place over a mile (1600m) and serves as a key lead-up to the bigger Group 1 races during the festival like the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) which has moved to mid-October and renamed the King Charles III Stakes on The Everest Day as of 2023. Superstar mare Winx (2017) was the last galloper to do the Chelmsford Stakes – George Main Stakes double before the latter was renamed.
The lucrative Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) held in Sydney on the same day Melbourne hosts its Victoria Derby Day card is a likely end-of-spring option for Chelmsford Stakes graduates and Think It Over (2021) was the last to do the double.
Other Chelmsford Stakes graduates may continue on to Epsom Handicap Day with the 2022 third placegetter No Compromise winning that year’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).
In 2023 Think It Over ran third in a failed title defence but won the $1 million 7 Stakes at this next start.
The 2024 Chelmsford Stakes winner Buckaroo franked the form winning Caulfield’s Group 1 Underwood Stakes at his next start. He also ran second in the Turnbull Stakes and that year’s Caulfield Cup trifecta.
