Run over 2,040 metres at Moonee Valley* during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, the Alister Clark Stakes is Group 2 race currently held on a Saturday in late March as part of William Reid Stakes Day. 

*In 2026 the Alister Clark Stakes and full William Reid Stakes Day card moved to Caulfield with The Valley closed for a major redevelopment.

Formerly a Friday night racing feature at The Valley, in 2021 the Alister Clark Stakes was moved to the Saturday to accompany the then $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m) on The Valley race card before moving back to Friday night in 2022 with the world’s richest mile race returning to Flemington for the fourth edition.

In 2023 the All-Star Mile returned to Moonee Valley with the Alister Clark Stakes again moved to the Saturday race card.

The 2024 Alister Clark Stakes ran on the Saturday after the All-Star Mile as part of The Valley’s William Reid Stakes meeting.

The event currently offers $500,000 and is a set weights clash for three-year-olds that could potentially head up to Sydney for a shot at the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick during ‘The Championships’.

In 2022 Explosive Jack improved on a third in the Alister Clark Stakes to win the Australian Derby – South Australian Derby double at his next two starts and then run third in the Queensland Derby. Young Werther meanwhile ran second in the Alister Clark and ATC Derby results that autumn.

In 2023 Suizuro ran second in the Alister Clark before an Australian Derby third.

The Group 2 Caulfield Autumn Classic, taking place a few weeks prior over 1800m makes a nice lead-up into the Alister Clark Stakes and Global Exchange (2019) and Shanwah (2025) are the latest horses to do the double. 

The 2024 Alister Clark Stakes winner was 50/1 outsider Antrim Coast who came off a NZ Derby second across the Tasman and who went on to place fourth in that year’s SA Derby.

The 2025 Alister Clark Stakes proved a genuine form race, with Shanwah backing up his win by finishing third in the ATC Derby at his next outing. The depth of the race was highlighted again by Statuario, who ran third in the Alister Clark before stepping out in May to finish second in the Group 1 SA Derby, further reinforcing the strength of that year’s edition.

The 2026 Alister Clark Stakes takes place at Caulfield Racecourse, moved from Moonee Valley which is undergoing redevelopment, on Saturday, March 21, 2026 on the same day as Sydney hosts its famous Golden Slipper Stakes Day card at Rosehill. 

The Alister Clark Stakes is currently part of 2026 William Reid Stakes Day card. Other key events on the program include the:

• Group 2 $300,000 Sunline Stakes (1600m),
