Gringotts ($2.45F) went back-to-back in the 2025 The Gong results at Kembla Grange with a daring rails ride from Nash Rawiller securing the $1 million Group 3 mile feature. The Ciaron Maher-trained Per Incanto gelding justified his favouritism, digging deep to hold off Estadio Mestalla by half a length in testing heavy conditions. Rawiller’s bold decision to stick to the inside rail, while most jockeys fanned wide in search of better ground, proved decisive as he guided Gringotts through the heavier going to produce a trademark tough finish.

First conducted in 2019 The Gong is one of the newer races that make-up the wider The Everest Carnival in Sydney during the spring.
Having started out as a ‘Special Conditions’ event, it officially gained Group 3 status in 2024.
Offering $1 million in prize money, the event is run and won at Kembla Grange Racecourse on a Saturday in late November and along with the previous Saturday’s The Hunter at Newcastle Racecourse, is one of the richest provincial races held in the state of New South Wales.
Run and won over 1600m, The Going is a quality handicap event open to horses aged three-years-old and above.
The Gong makes a nice end-of-season target for horses out of the Group races over the 1400m – 1600m distance range over the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
Mares in The Gong field may come via a Victoria Derby Day run three weeks prior in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington, while four-year-olds may target this race off an October run in the $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill.
Count De Rupee (2nd in 2021) is the latest The Gong winner to come off a lead-up Golden Eagle run.
The $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) is another potential lead-up into The Gong, some gallopers stepping back down in distance for the million-dollar showdown.
Any five-year-old The Gong contenders may have previously contested Rosehill’s $2 million The Five Diamonds (1800m) with Detonator Jack (3rd in 2023) the last The Gong champ to come via that lucrative lead-up event.
The $3 million The Big Dance race, run in Sydney on Melbourne Cup Day, is another key The Gong lead-up and Gringotts (2024 and 2025) was the last to do the double.
Gringotts would also go on to win the 2025 Group 1 George Ryder Stakes in the autumn and defend both his The Big Dance and The Gong titles in 2025.
