First conducted in 2019 The Hunter is one of the newer feature races that make-up the wider The Everest Carnival in Sydney during the spring.
Offering $1 million in prize money, the event is run and won at Newcastle Racecourse on a Saturday in mid-November and along with The Gong at Kembla Grange is one of the richest provincial races held in the state of New South Wales.
Run and won over 1300m, The Hunter is a quality handicap event open to horses aged three-years-old and above.
It officially gained Group 2 status in 2024 the same year The Everest became a Group 1 Australian horse race.
The Hunter makes a nice end-of-season target for horses out of the Group races over the 1200m – 1400m distance range over the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
Mares in The Hunter field may come via a Victoria Derby Day run a fortnight prior in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
Other runners may have previously contested the $20 million The Everest (1200m) and or the $3 million Winners Stakes (1300m).
In 2021 The Hunter winner Lost And Running ran fourth in The Everest and second in the Winners Stakes (run that year as the Classique Legend Stakes).
The 2023 The Hunter winner Coal Crusher came via a fourth in that year’s Winners Stakes (known as the Giga Kick Stakes that spring).
