Midnight was the inaugural South Australian Derby winner back in 1860 when the event was known as the Thebarton Derby.
Many South Australian Derby winners have gone on to win Flemington’s iconic Melbourne Cup race in subsequent years including The Assyrian (1880), Gatum Gatum (1961), and the great grey Subzero (1992).
The 2009 South Australian Derby winner Rebel Raider did so following his historic upset in the Victoria Derby at 100/1.

The 2022 South Australian Derby winner Jungle Magnate backed-up from a victory in the Group 3 SA Chairman’s Stakes at the same track.
The South Australian Derby 2023 winner was the Patrick Payne-trained Dunkel ($8) who won the summer’s Tasmanian Derby and handed Payne his first Group 1 success as a trainer, while jockey Billy Egan also celebrated Group 1 win number one with the SA Derby 2023 result.
The 2024 South Australian Derby winner was the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained The Autumn Sun filly Coco Sun ($5) who was excellent coming off a box seat run in third to flash up the inside with former local hoop Jamie Kah aboard to beat home the boys on the quick back-up off an Australasian Oaks third.
The 2025 South Australian Derby winner was three-year-old Dundeel filly Femminile ($19) for trainer Phillip Stokes with jockey Lachlan Neindorf aboard on 54.5kg from barrier 2 to win by 0.73 lengths in a time of 2:38.36.
The 2026 South Australian Derby winner is TBD and will be known when the million-dollar Morphettville staying showdown for three-year-olds takes place in Adelaide on Saturday May 2.
