Currently run over 2,400 metres having recently been reduced from two miles, the Queensland Cup is a Listed race taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane.
Formerly part of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and run in July, the event was moved to the spring in 2020 and is now held on a Saturday in early October on the same day as Melbourne’s Caulfield Guineas. The event’s prize money currently sits at $160,000 but has offered up to $200,000 in stakes in the past.
The 2018 Queensland Cup race took place at the Sunshine Coast and ran as The Queen’s Cup before returning to Eagle Farm in 2019.
In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic seriously interrupted the Queensland and Brisbane Winter Racing Carnivals forcing the abandonment or postponement of a number of races including the Queensland Cup.
Note: The rescheduled 2020 Queensland Cup ran on Saturday October 10, 2020 at Doomben Racecourse over a shortened distance of 2200m and saw nine-year-old Grey Lion take out the $125,000 in prize money.
For 2021 the race remained a spring event but ran at Eagle Farm at set weights plus penalties over 2,400m as a potential lead-up to the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in Melbourne a fortnight later.
In 2022 the Queensland Cup ran in the spring on the second Saturday of October, but returned to a quality handicap race.
