The ATC Premier’s Cup is a Group 3 race conducted at Royal Randwick Racecourse in mid to late August each year as a key early lead-up into the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
Held on Winx Stakes Day, the event is now run over 2000m and is a quality handicap race.
The Premier’s Cup offers $250,000 in prize money and is open to horses aged three-years-old and upwards.
The Premier’s Cup Prelude winner is exempt from ballot.
The race was inaugurated in 1947 as the Rosehill Cup before being renamed in 1989.
It has been contested over a variety of distances from 1800m – 2400m over the years and gained its current Group 3 status in 2018 the year subsequent three-time Group 1 champion Avilius won.
Plenty of nice horses have won the Premier’s Cup race over the years including dual Cox Plate champion Hydrogen (1952), the race’s first two-time winner Tails (1969-70), Natural Habit (1988), that year’s Caulfield Cup hero Railings (2005), Glencadam Gold (2012), and Mugatoo (2020).
The ATC Premier’s Cup serves as a nice lead-up into the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) held later in the spring on Epsom Handicap Day. Magic Hurricane (2015) was the last horse to complete the Premier’s Cup – The Metropolitan double.
The form out of the 2020 Premier’s Cup was franked with the winner Mugatoo finishing second in that year’s The Metropolitan results before returning the following autumn to win the The All-Star Mile race in Melbourne.
The 2022 ATC Premier’s Cup winner Arapaho would go on to become a Group 1 winner the next year taking out the 2023 Tancred Stakes.
